Joe Thompson
Weather Anchor
Joe joined the Skywatch 5 weather team in May 2011, and was welcomed appropriately with a severe weather outbreak his very first night on air. A native of Perrysburg, Ohio, Joe received his bachelor’s degree in meteorology from Penn State University.
It was at Penn State where Joe got his first chance to get in front of the camera and tell people the weather. Joe worked on a number of shows, including Weather World, which was broadcast live across Pennsylvania every weekday. After graduating, Joe moved to the western slope of the Rocky Mountains, spending two years as a reporter and the weekend meteorologist at KREX-TV in Grand Junction, Colorado. That’s when KHAS came a calling.
Joe is what you would describe as a ‘weather weenie’ (a very technical definition), with a passion for all weather, including severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, extreme temperatures and blizzards. So you can tell Joe is excited to be in Nebraska, which offers everything a meteorologist could want.
When Joe’s not forecasting, he’s a die hard sports fan, cheering on the Detroit Tigers, Lions, and Red Wings. And while he’s excited to see Nebraska join the Big 10, sorry Cornhusker fans, Joe will be rooting on his Penn State Nittany Lions every chance he gets. Joe also loves to attempt the game of golf whenever he can, traveling, and spending time with family in friends.
You can catch Joe weeknights on News 5 at 6 and 10.
