Fischer and Kerrey on the campaign trail
U.S. Senate Candidates Bob Kerrey and Deb Fischer were on the campaign trail Saturday.
The candidates made stops in Grand Island for the Harvest of Harmony Parade, then continued to make appearances in the area. Both are eager to talk about the big issues. News 5's Lauren Conley caught up with the candidates Saturday. As the senate campaign heats up, the candidates want you to know they don't have much in common. "Mr. Kerrey and I are different on practically every single issue," Fischer said. "There are significant differences between the experiences that I have and Senator Fischer," Kerrey said. Kerrey attended a luncheon at the Grand Island United Veterans Club Saturday. And we caught up with Fischer at a campaign event in Hastings. It was a hot button issue at last weeks final debate, balancing the budget. Although they both agree on cutting spending, they disagree over taxes. "Asking people who make more than a million dollars a year to pay more in taxes is a good thing to do," Kerrey said. Fischer says the tax code in Nebraska works. Tax increases aren't the answer. "We're providing property tax relief," Fischer said. "We eliminated the death tax. We cut back on income taxes. We need to do that in Washington, as well." She believes Nebraska is a role model state for other reasons too, saying our non-partisan legislature works great. Kerrey hopes to pass a constitutional amendment to make Congress non-partisan. "We have way too many committees, spend way too much money and get way too little done," Kerrey said. Though his Republican counterpart argues he's being unrealistic. "It works here, but I don't see that other states, that other people in those states, they don't understand it," Fischer added. Kerrey claims Congress will get more accomplished, while Fischer says this can't happen overnight. It's just another day on the campaign trail, as they each try to get their messages to Nebraskans. |
