Fischer leads Kerrey in new poll
Just four days from the elections and the U.S. Senate Race heats up. News 5 continues our Decision 2012 election coverage on the campaign trails of Republican Deb Fischer and opponent Bob Kerrey.
The race is really starting to tighten up. Evidence of that Jen and Colin, is both received big endorsements this week. Also, a Karl Rove Superpac spent over $400,000 in new ads attacking Bob Kerrey. One of the latest polls shows Republican candidate Deb Fischer in the lead over Democratic opponent Bob Kerrey by nearly 3 points. But Fischer says another poll has her even farther ahead. "The last poll that I saw today, I'm 12 points up and so, you know, the 3 point poll that was one we really didn't think was happening but, you know, polls are polls," said Fischer. In the last couple of days, some big names have been endorsing the candidates. Arizona senator and 2008 Republican presidential nominee John McCain was campaigning with Deb Fischer this morning. "John McCain coming in, that was just a big boost to the campaign this morning when we were in Omaha," Fischer said. Meanwhile, in what some are calling a game changer, former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel endorsed Kerrey Thursday. "I'm grateful for his endorsement and I think it will matter in the campaign," Kerrey said. One divisive issue between the candidates is their stance on abortion. "I'm pro-life and Nebraskans know I'm pro-life. We have been passing a number of bills in the legislature that allows for parental notification for example," said Fischer. On the other hand Kerrey supports abortion rights. Another important issue facing the country is balancing the budget. "I believe that Harry Reid is the cause for much of the grid lock that we're facing in Washington because he won't allow hardly anything to come before the United States Senate to be voted upon," said Fischer. And Kerrey says one step to balancing the budget is bipartisanship. "Congress has become too partisan. The only way you're going to stop it is actually by doing what he did yesterday, demonstrating a willingness to have people in his own party get angry," said Kerrey. Kerrey is hoping Hagel will solidify his bipartisanship platform. Kerrey will make his final stops in Hastings and Grand Island Saturday. |
