Dr. Bohlen's Blog: June 11, 2010 - "Surf and Turf"

Today is about food. Sometimes when you have nothing to do you eat and sleep. Trying to find a balance with mental activity and physical activity can be challenging. I thought I would share with you the Friday night meal with a few pictures then an update on Dean's garden.

Every Friday they serve the same meal for supper. They have some form of steak and the the surf side is small lobster tails and king crab legs. I will tell you I tried the steak the very first Friday and it was not good. Kind of chewy and thin. The most disappointing thing about the food here is the steak/hamburgers. It just seems to be a long ways from being normal. Even the hamburgers are not good. I would describe them as eating turf for sure. The first picture is of a lovely plate of crab legs (image 503)

They are pretty good. You even get the butter sauce. I have found it
difficult to eat seafood when I am greater then 1 state away from the coast. I know its kind of a funny rule but when you live in Richmond, VA and have had all the fresh seafood in the world there it just tastes and seems different. Some aspects of seafood are an acquired taste and when I lived there the 2 new things I tried was calamari and oysters. Calamari is generally safe b/c it is fried and you can find it a lot of places now. Oysters though really scare me when they are in Nebraska. In Virginia they had these seafood bars that you could get just about anything from the ocean and fresh. The best were buckets of steamed shrimp and steamed oysters.

Don't ever eat them raw. Its not really safe. I broke my rule here with
the seafood but if you try the steak you are pretty much resigned to the crab. It is pretty good but I have decided after today that I think I am going to give it up for a couple of weeks. It just is getting old to have it every week. Plus there is no good scenery to go with it.

The second picture is of the dining hall on the inside.

This is the same building that got hit in those pictures. I thought it was
great what one of the members of our group said after the attack. They were walking by to go there to eat basically 1 hour after it happened and saw some local Iraqi guys standing there admiring the hit. There are a small number of them who work here. The point is they can kiss our butt. They tried to shut us down and 1 hour later we are back to business as usual. We had no injuries thank goodness and no other sniff of activity since then.

The cool thing about this picture is all the flags. Everybody that has
been here has brought there state flags and then the university flags of
their school. If you look far in the back on the right there are two red
flags. These are not always up. These flags signifies the presence of a 1 star and 2 star General eating in the dining hall tonight. The people
standing in the far back on the right are a band that plays when they are here. This is usually the case on Friday nights. Surf, turf, and big shots in the dining hall.

The last topic is Dean's radish farm. We have some growth.

You can see the sprouts coming up on the right/middle of the picture. I
took the picture to give you the sense that the pelicans and the frog is of life size. Pretty cool huh. I think the frog is to guard the radishes from the ants and the pelicans are to guard them from the birds. Dean's dream is coming true. We will see b/c we basically have 1 month to go now before we head towards Kuwait and fly home. Thanks for listening today
