Hastings students host garage sale to help teacher

A garage sale for a good cause. Fifth graders at Watson Elementary in Hastings donated their time, toys, games, and books this weekend to help one of their teachers.

The class of 28 students has a Para-Educator whose husband has been battling malignant and benign tumors that are wrapped around his spinal cord.

He's been unable to work while recovering from surgeries, so the class wanted to help with the family's medical expenses.

They put their heads together and decided on a garage sale for their citizenship unit.

Students said they just want to make a difference.

"It started really small and to know that it grew so much that everybody cares, that just shows a lot about our school and all the kids there that are willing to take time out of their time to do this for somebody else," said student Tasia Theoharis.

"It's just really fun to know that I'm helping by one person can do so much," student Julia Reimer.

The sale raised $1500 this weekend.

If you would like to donate, checks are still being accepted at the Watson School office.
