Grand Island student excels in multiple fields
He could be the next Mike Greenburg or Scott Van Pelt. With a full scholarship at UNK next year and awards in writing and sports, Lance Kush, a senior at Grand Island has big plans for his future.
News Five's Amy West introduces us to this up and coming star in tonight's Celebrate Youth. "Steelers were going for their seventh super bowl but that dream ended as Green Bay came out on top - 38 to 25 against the champion Pittsburg Steelers." That's just a taste of what Islander Lance Kush would like to do the rest of his life. "The dream job would maybe be a desk anchor at Sports Center. I mean when I grew up I loved watching Sports Center and all the ESPN shows so that would be awesome," said Kush. He's on his way as the current Editor and Chief of Grand Island Senior High's newspaper - The Islander. "He joined the staff not having had journalism and turned out to be just a top-notch writer and reporter," said newspaper advisor Judy Lorenzen. In fact, Lance won the Nebraska state competition for sports writing his first year on the paper. But his skills aren't limited to reporting. "The last two years I've been the second runner up at state tennis singles. Those are really good accomplishments too I'm really proud of those," Kush said. And if that's not enough he has a 4.0 GPA and a board of regents scholarship to UNK next year. Oh, and you should hear him sing. "Seriously, I can see Lance Kush reaching whatever his dreams are. This kid is so talented in so many areas," said Lorenzen. The opinionated young man said he tries to get readers to think and remembers most an article he wrote about being a "True Islander." It's not all about winning it's about how you do things on more like a moral basis - how you truly become successful, what it means to be a true Islander athlete. A true Islander... ready to take the world by storm. We'd like to meet more Nebraska youth. If you know an exceptional kid we should feature let us know email us at News5@khastv.com. |
