Movie Review: Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
From Focus Features the studio that released the modern classics "Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind," "Brokeback Mountain," and "Milk" is "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy."
A spy film that is less focused on action and more on acting, "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" is more than a modern classic. It is a masterpiece and the credit should be given to its incredible director, Tomas Alfredson, and the spectacular ensemble. "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" is the film adaptation of John Le Carre's (Leh Carray) book of the same name. It tells the story of an ex-spy, George Smiley, who is enlisted by a senior government official to investigate the possibility of a mole in the British secret service. Gary Oldman gives an exceptional performance as Smiley, a role that many actors have played including the equally exceptional Sir Alec Guiness. Oldman gives a performance that is expertly crafted with a subtly not often enough seen in film. Oldman's Smiley is quiet like a mouse, cunning like a fox, and his owl-eyed glasses pull the performance together perfectly. The other performances in the film are just as moving as Oldman's. It is hard to choose the best stand-out performers, but if I were to try I would say Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Strong, Tom Hardy, and Colin Firth give the performances of their careers so far. "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" was a film I was looking forward to for some time, but didn't get a chance to see in theatres. I was worried I wouldn't be able to latch onto the story or follow it, but I surprised myself and found hidden within a complex puzzle a truly fascinating film. I encourage you also to see "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" which is now out on dvd and blu-ray. I am pleased to give the film my highest critical praise with a rating of four out of four stars.
