..especially marijuana.

The first round of data was collected in 1996 from nearly 17-thousand kids ages 9 to 15. Overeating and binge eating were assessed every 12 to 24 months by questionnaires until 2005.

Binge eating, but not overeating, was linked to the onset of weight gain and obesity in both girls and boys. It was also significantly associated with the appearance of symptoms of depression.

While overeating with or without a loss of control wasn't connected to binge drinking...both were strongly associated with when kids started using marijuana and other drugs.

Based on the study findings that binge eating may be predictive of some serious teenage health issues, the researchers recommend that doctors screen adolescents for the disorder.
