The study, just published in the journal Child Development, shows while IQ is strongly related to achievement when you're starting out with math-. motivation and study skills play a major role as you get older.

Data was compiled from more than 35-hundred German students who were followed from grades 5 through 10.

The results: Students who felt competent, were motivated by good teachers, and used study strategies instead of rote memorizing, saw their math skills shine. In fact, how smart a student was had no relation to growth in math achievement.

The researchers hope their findings lead to new educational programs that help children advance in math and other subjects.
