Viruses and Exercise

KHAS News 5 - Coverage You Can Count On!

..but plenty of viruses are still floating around out there from stomach bugs to respiratory illnesses.

So a question...if you're sick, should you drag yourself out of bed to exercise? Or give your body time to heal?

Maintaining a fitness routine can help boost your immune system, but the experts at Loyola University warn vigorous workouts and viruses don't mix.

If you have a fever or severe symptoms, rest is best. With mild symptoms, try mild exercise shorter, less intense sessions. Low-impact walking and easy cycling are good options.

Definitely avoid the gym if you're battling a serious bug. No matter how many times you wipe down the machines you use it's not fair to share with your fellow gym rats.

The experts also say it may be a good idea to skip the gym if you're the lucky one who's healthy right now! Avoiding contact with infected people is the best way to avoid illness.

Try exercising outdoors weather permitting until these outbreaks are over.
