New drugs could help relieve hot flashes
Hope could be on the horizon for women who suffer from hot flashes. Monday an FDA advisory panel will review two new marketing applications for drugs that have been shown to reduce hot flashes.
Sefelsa was found to reduce the severity and frequency of hot flashes for at least four weeks. The other drug is Paxil - already approved for depression and anxiety. It was shown to be more consistent at treating menopause symptoms. The only approved treatment for menopause is hormone replacement therapy which has been linked to an increased risk for breast cancer and stroke. These drugs could be the first non-hormonal treatment for hot flashes. |
