A virus and the common cold are affecting some Central Nebraskans. News 5's Ginger ten Bensel has more in this week's edition of "What's Going Around."

Dr. Janice Kutlek with the Grand Island Clinic says she's had several patients come in with a minor upper respiratory infection.

Symptoms of the illness include a runny nose, cough and a sore throat.

She has also seen patients with the common cold.

Contact Dermatitis is something that several of her patients have experienced as well. She says it's important to be aware of weeds such as poison ivy and poison oak.

Kutilek says that now is a good time to remind everyone that flu shots will be available at the Grand Island Clinic starting next month. This year's flu shot will be combined with a vaccine for the swine flu.

Kutilek also had to admit two toddlers into the hospital with an accidental overdose. The children were from two separate families. One child had gotten into its families medication. The other child had gotten into illegal drugs that were in the house. She says this is a major reminder of how important it is to keep all drugs out of the reach of children whether it's prescription and non-prescription drugs.

Dr. Michael Johnson with the Hastings Family Practice says that ragweed season is in full swing and he has seen a lot of patients with allergies.

Plus, he's also seen quite a few patients with a virus. He says that symptoms of the virus are headache, upset stomach, along with an achy rundown feeling.

Johnson has also seen several patients with a pulmonary embolism. It is a blood clot to the lungs that is sometimes preceded by a blood clot to the leg. Patients may experience leg swelling and pain. Symptoms of a pulmonary embolism can include shortness of breath, cough and chest pain.
