What's Going Around: Croup, Bronchitis, Hand Foot and Mouth Disease
A number of viruses are going around. Dr. Michael Johnson with the Hastings Family Practice says he has seen two more patients with bacterial pneumonia in the past few days. One patient was recently hospitalized.
He says that the common cold and bronchitis are still going around as well. Dr. Janice Kutlek with the Grand Island Clinic says that croup is going around. Croup is a virus that gets into the voice box. Symptoms include a hoarse sounding voice, a barking cough, and a noise that occurs when the patient breathes. That sound, called stridor, is made when air comes across the voice box. Croup is an illness that gets worse at night. When a child is coughing and crying it causes very noisy breathing. Kutilek says if the child is having difficulty breathing you can take your little one into an area where they can breathe cool air or you can steam up the bathroom for them. Both can help improve the child's breathing. Dr. Kutliek has also seen patients with a mouth herpes virus. The virus is much worse in children less than two years old. The painful virus affects the tongue and gums. It is not a recurring kind of virus. Hand Foot and Mouth is also going around. And to add to the other illnesses, Kutilek has seen three kids with a virus that causes a high fever. The patients are tired and achy with a red throat. Kutilek says if your child has a fever allow the body to have a low grade temperature to help fight the virus. If other symptoms surface such as dehydration, difficulty breathing, if the child doesn't feel like doing anything, or if the fever lasts more than a few days they need to be seen by a doctor. |
