What's Going Around: Flu, Tonsillitis, Bronchitis
A number of central Nebraskans are battling the flu. News 5's Ginger ten Bensel spoke with area doctors about the flu and other illnesses that some central Nebraskan's are battling in this week's edition of "What's Going Around."
Dr. Michael Johnson with the Hastings Family Practice is seeing patients with the common cold, sore throats, tonsillitis and bronchitis. But the flu is the big thing the Hastings doctor is seeing right now. Symptoms of the flu include a sore throat, an achy feeling, fever, congestion, cough and vomiting. Tylenol or Ibuprofen can help with the symptoms, but it's vital to get as much rest as possible and drink plenty of fluids. Johnson did say that flu shots are getting the job done. And a majority of the patients he's seen with the illness did not get a flu shot. He says that the worst part of the flu season usually lasts three to four weeks. If you get to the doctor within the first 24 to 48 hours of getting the flu you can ask for a prescription for Tami flu. While Tami Flu can't stop the flu, it can lessen the severity of the illness. The flu is going around in the Kearney area as well. Doctor Michael Hanich with the Kearney Clinic says that he's seen a number of people with influenza. He doesn't believe that the flu season is in full swing yet, but we're getting close. Approximately one fifth of the patients he's seen have the flu. He added that "full swing" would mean everyone he saw had the flu. Hanich has also seen patients with high blood pressure and diabetes. |
