What's Going Around: RSV, influenza
The flu is in full swing. News 5's Ginger ten Bensel spoke with area doctors about the flu and other illnesses in this week's edition of "What's Going Around."
Dr. Janice Kutilek with the Grand Island Clinic says that she is still seeing patients with the flu, but the big thing she is seeing right now is RSV - Respiratory Syncytial Virus. She says she's seeing more and more cases of the illness. RSV is a virus that causes problems with wheezing and labored breathing in children under the age of two, but she's also seen five year olds with wheezing. If your child is coughing a lot and experiencing labored breathing they need to see a doctor. RSV patients do not have as high of a fever as patients with influenza. And they don't look as sick. She's also seeing patients with strep throat and gastroenteritis. She says she hasn't seen anything unusual for this time of year but she's seen a lot of different illnesses. Dr. Michael Hanich of the Kearney Clinic says that the flu is really hitting hard. He says that he had to hospitalize a patient with influenza. The patient had been at a meeting and everyone at the meeting got the flu. He added that the flu is really hitting the younger population hard. And he says that the flu shot has not been as affective this year. The best advice? Good hand washing and make sure you cover your mouth when you cough. |
