Sinus infections and and Pneumonia are going around in Central Nebraska.

Dr. Michael Johnson with the Hastings Family Practice says he's seen two patients with pneumonia.

More specifically, bacterial pneumonia is going around.

Johnson says you can get very sick with bacterial pneumonia, especially if the patient has other conditions such as asthma or emphysema or other health problems.

Sometimes the patient can have significant issues with breathing and end up in the hospital.

Symptoms of bacterial pneumonia can include fever or a cough.

Johnson added that a high fever causes a person to be more concerned about pneumonia over bronchitis or the common cold.

The best way for pneumonia prevention is simply getting the pneumonia shot, pneumovax.

And anyone 65 or over should have a pneumonia vaccination. Plus anyone with a chronic illness, lung disease, chronic respiratory illnesses, a heart condition or diabetes should have a pneumonia shot.

Johnson says that one of his patients with pneumonia has a lot of achiness and that can be a sign of pneumonia or the flu.

But he says he has not seen any cases of the flu.

Johnson has also seen patients with sinus Infections, colds and bronchitis.
