Some Central Nebraskans are dealing with more than just the common cold. News 5's Ginger ten Bensel gives us an update on "What's Going Around?"
Spreading good cheer this holiday season has caused some people to catch a sore throat.
Here's what's going around this week.
Doctor Michael Johnson with the Hastings Family Practice says he's seen several patients dealing with strep throat. Symptoms of strep throat include a high fever, headache and nausea.
Strep throat is very contagious. A person with the illness will need to take antibiotics for twenty four hours before going back to school or work.
Symptoms of a sore throat can also be a signal of Mono. Dr. Johnson has seen one case of the illness this season.
The flu is also in the air.
Doctor Janice Kutilek with the Grand Island Clinic says that she has seen one case of influenza this week.
The same patient came down with a secondary infection. bacterial pneumonia.
Dr. Kutilek says if you are sick and not getting better you need to see a doctor.
Symptoms of influenza include a high fever, cough, body aches, sore throat, runny nose and fatigue.
Sore throats are also an issue for people in Kearney. Dr. Michael Hanich with the Kearney clinic has seen several patients with sore throats.
He says while many of them are viral the ones he's seeing are bacterial infections.
He says that since the weather has been up and down people are out and about getting exposed to illnesses.
He says he hasn't seen any cases of influenza in his office but the flu season is expected to be in full swing from January to March so if you haven't gotten a flu shot now is the time to get one.
