What's Going Around: Strep Pneumoniae, gastroenteritis, pneumonia
Stomach and respiratory illnesses are making their rounds in Central Nebraska. Dr. Janice Kutlek with the Grand Island Clinic says there are a lot of different illnesses going around.
She's seen another patient who is very sick with mono. The patient came in with a headache, fever, sore throat, stomachache and severe achiness. Some patients with mono have very large raw looking tonsils. If you have any of these symptoms see a doctor. Another patient came into the Grand Island Clinic with myco-plasma pneumonia. Kutilek says there are several other illnesses going around including strep throat, gastroenteritis and a lot of respiratory viruses. She says that they are common illnesses for this time of year. If you have gastroenteritis it's very important to drink plenty of fluids. Kutilek says that pedialyte is great for rehydration. She has also seen patients with a bacterial infection called Strep Pneumoniae. It starts out as a respiratory infection and it can get extremely bad turning into an ear infection or a blood infection. Dr. Michael Johnson with the Hastings Family Practice says gastroenteritis and bronchitis are going around. He put three patients in the hospital with gastroenteritis. He says that the viral illness is quick moving but its hit some people pretty hard. Plus he has also put one person in the hospital with bacterial pneumonia. |
