What's Going Around: walking pneumonia, roseola, chicken pox
A number of illnesses are in the air including walking pneumonia. Dr. Janice Kutlek with the Grand Island Clinic says that she has seen one person with mycoplasma otherwise known as walking pneumonia.
Mycoplasma is a bacterial pneumonia. It's not usually seen in x-rays as a large spot of infection. The infection is actually spread throughout the lungs. Symptoms of Mycoplasma, or Walking Pneumonia include a low grade fever, fatigue, cough, headache stuffy and runny nose along with a rash. If you have these symptoms see your doctor. Kutilek is also seeing patients with Roseola. Symptoms of Roseola include a fever that lasts three days. When the fever is over a rash appears. She has also seen children with an enterovirus rash. It looks like it's the size of a pin head and the spots are flat, as opposed to raised. Symptoms of enterovirus include a fever with mild cold symptoms. Kutilek has also seen patients with chicken pox. Doctor Michael Hanich with the Kearney Clinic says that he's seen several patients with gallstones. He has also seen several patients with ulcer disease. Hanish says if you are over 65 years old, it's important to get a shingles vaccination. He added that it's important to get a pneumonia shot if you have diabetes, heart disease or a compromised system. For more information you can visit |
