You have heard of counterfeit money, fake watches and purse knockoffs, but coupon fraud? This week News 5 has shown you supermarket secrets - how stretching your dollars with coupons could save you hundreds of dollars. In the conclusion of News Five's in depth report Amy West shows us what could permanently take coupons out of the drawer.

In a world that can knock–off anything even coupon savers need beware.

"There have been some coupons circulated that people have basically made up themselves and they have been very high dollar ones," said Linda Stutesman.

"This is what is going to take couponing away is people that are altering the coupons," said Sunmart Store Director Brenda Christensen.

It is causing enough problems that companies offer cash to catch coupon counterfeiters and stores are cracking down.

"So I tell my cashiers just watch for ones that look like they are printed off the computers and bigger dollar amounts. If they do not make sense question them," said Christensen.

But just like in any 'high–priced' scheme there are ways to recognize a fake.

"They are all color marked so you cannot copy—your stores will know if it's a copy.

If you see a high dollar for a free item—be kind of leery about it—call the company. That is what I did and it ended up being fraudulent," said Stutesman.

Barbara said fraud advisories come in everyday, but she has not seen a big problem in Nebraska.

"Nebraskans are, well, we hope and believe that they are more honest," said Christensen.

More honest and perhaps more courteous. There are rules of coupon etiquette Nebraskans adhere to. Putting coupon items at the front of the check out line makes it easier for the cashier to find items - and keeps people waiting behind you happy.

And even if you have lots of coupons for an item if there are not very many of them in stock couponers say it is polite to leave a few for others looking for the same deal.

While the current coupon frauds will not take savings away anytime soon coupon courtesy helps keep them going.
