From cutting coupons to buying and selling local goods online to upscale consignment shops– Nebraskans are stretching their dollar in these tough economic times.

As part of our News 5 Special Report, "Making Do" Anthony Pura take a closer look at an old local bargain hunter's marketplace that's been around since 1941, and it's only a phone call and a radio dial away.

"Her name is beanie and she was on for free and so my husband got her for me for mother's day,” said Dawn Hock.

These little guys can run you up a hundred dollars. So anytime you can get a ferret for free, it's a party.

"I listen to it every day; I don't leave the house without listening to it,” said Josh Hock.

Josh and Dawn Hock and their two kids have gotten a lot of stuff at great bargains just by tuning their radio to Partyline, every 9 to 10AM, Monday through Saturday.

Josh usually listens to it with a pen and paper at hand to right down phone numbers and bargains.

"Just so I don't miss anything," said Josh.

Dawn's car: bought off party line for a little over 300 bucks. A TV counsel, a partyline buy, so is the Playstation system their son's tricycle, a free grab.

Mike Will is the voice of the show. You name it, he's heard for sale on his show.

"The weirdest thing I’ve had someone sell a bundle of unused underwear,” said Mike Will, Partyline Host.

What are some popular items for sale on the show these days?

"We've seen an increase of campers and things like that, seen boats, people maybe trying to escape the high gas prices,” said Mike

Of course don't think every offer is a bargain, Josh and Dawn say some sellers bump the price of an item. So before they buy;

"We'll call the people up and see how much they’re asking and then we'll call a store up and see what prices they have,” said Josh Hock

"Talk to them if you're interested, talk to them and sometimes they'll go lower,” said Dawn Hock.

Smart bartering tricks coupled into a buy, sell and trade market that helps their family stretch the buck a little further.

Of course, you can also make a buck or two off partyline by selling your stuff. This week the Hocks are selling a lawnmower and humidifier.

They're also in the market for a 5 to 6 bedroom apartment and a mini–van.
