12 year old charged for sexual assault of faculty member
A 12 year old Grand Island middle school student was taken into custody last Friday by Grand Island police. The boy is facing charges of sexually assaulting a faculty member.
Officers responded between 8:30 and 12:00 on Friday.
The 12 year old's name is not being released because he is a juvenile. However, we do know the boy is from Grand Island. And, since the incident has been released to his parents.
Grand Island Police say when they detained the 12 year old he was cited for two charges.
"The officer took a report of a third degree sexual and an attempted first degree sexual assault," said Officer Butch Hurst.
The boy was a student at Skills Academy which is located inside Westridge Middle School.
The Skills Academy program is a temporary placement for students with behavioral or social problems, who struggle with interpersonal relationships and emotional regulation.
Students at the Skills Academy have no interaction with Westridge kids.
Following the incident, Superintendent Rob Winter provided a written statement saying quote, "we are in the second year of the Skills Academy program at Westridge. We continue to make progress with these students."
The 12 year old student will be tried as a juvenile.
The report has been completed it has been turned over to the county attorneys office for prosecution.
Grand Island Public Schools Marketing Director Jack Sheard declined to talk on camera regarding the incident, but released a statement saying quote, "in a situation last Friday, a student in the Skills Academy inappropriately touched a faculty member. The SRO intervened and the police department continues to investigate."
According to the Hall County Deputy the juvenile will be formally charged for a third degree sexual assault.
The child was released from custody on Friday. He will not return to the academy school. And there is a pending court date.
