Governor talks issues in Kearney

by Dara Newson

Monday night marked the 93rd annual Kearney Area Chamber of Commerce meeting. Governor Dave Heineman and Lieutenant Governor Rick Sheehy were there.

News 5 caught up with the Governor and discussed a variety of topics that have been front and center with lawmakers in Lincoln.

One of them is the end of the Inheritance Tax, a tax imposed upon beneficiaries when a person dies.

Officials within surrounding counties say they rely on that tax and have had many discussions claiming if the tax is stopped that would mean cuts to critical core services in their business.

Governor Henieman sees ending the inheritance tax a different way.

Another issue that's been getting a lot of attention is the state's role in Nebraska's management of child welfare cases.

The bill LB961 is a major piece of Nebraska's effort to overhaul its child services. Heineman says the state hasn't implemented changes to the child welfare system as well as they should.

And the theme of Monday night's 93rd annual event was "12 things to know about YOUR Chamber." Dozens of organizations gathered to partake in an evening of awards and honors given to distinguished businesses in Kearney.

Coming up later in the week we'll hear from the governor on the debate between the Democrats and the Republicans over the Keystone XL Pipeline issue.
