Children around the world love the curious little monkey named George, but did you know that he and his creators barely escaped the invasion of Paris during WWII?

Donna Walter, education coordinator at the Institute for Holocaust Education, gave a presentation to about 30 people at the Edith Abbott Memorial Library in Grand Island.

Walter chronicled how H. A. and Margret Rey, who wrote and illustrated the adventures of the mischievous monkey who was known as FiFi at the time, escaped France just three days before Paris was taken over by the invading German Army.

"I think most people are surprised at the origin of Curious George," said Walter. "I think most people thought H.A. and Margret Rey were just authors and illustrators and they put this book together. They have no idea that the manuscripts survived WWII, came out of France in the baskets of bicycles."

The Alcove Exhibit will be on display at the library until the 19th of this month.
