A man and his best friend

The love between man and dog takes on a whole new meaning in this next story. A Wisconsin dog owner cradles his ailing dog, sometimes for hours, while swimming in Wisconsin's Lake Superior.

You see, the German Shepherd named Schoep has some health problems that cause him a great deal of pain. Being in the water his only relief and only way he can sleep.

Boua Xiong has the touching story of a man and his best friend.

"Come on, buddy."

They say dogs are man's best friend. John Unger and Schoep are proof of that.

"It's choppy."

Their friendship started when John adopted Schoep from a shelter as a puppy 19 years ago.

Turns out Schoep wasn't the only one who needed to be rescued.

"He's been my guardian for a number of years," said John.

Time has given them memories, but it has also taken a toll on Schoep's body.

"This joint right here kind of freezes up," John said.

Arthritis and hip dysphasia have settled into Schoep's joints. The only comfort now is a routine that keeps Schoep off his feet.

"This is living. It just takes the weight off of his whole entire body. So whatever aches and pains are there it helps alleviate those," said John.

With no pressure on his body, Schoep quickly falls asleep in peace. Sometimes, they do this for hours.

"Whoa, yep, that was a big one, wasn't it, buddy."

John is careful with every minute. He's not sure how much longer Schoep will be around.

"This is a good wave today, these are good waves."

But Schoep has a best friend in John who promises to be there till the end.

John says it's just amazing to him that he still has the dog with him.
A story I think most of us can relate to.
