AAA explains sudden rise in gas prices in Central Nebraska
While gas prices are falling across the country, here in Nebraska they're on the upswing.
Prices at the pump have climbed in most states across the Midwest. In fact, Central Nebraskans are paying more than the current national average $3.49. AAA said several factors play into regional price variations, including location, the price of oil, and where the crude supply is coming from. Motorists are paying close attention, and making sure they're filling up only to where they can afford. "I travel a lot so every time I come here it's just another dollar that i have to pay that I was wishing maybe I could steady out," said driver Jody Hitesman. "I'm going, OK, I need to try and budget myself for the $75 to $80 fill up on my truck," added Matt Hoffman. Up until a few weeks ago Nebraskans were paying the lowest gas prices in the country, and today Nebraska's average price for regular unleaded fuel is 10 cents higher than the national average. AAA Nebraska says prices are increasing because of higher fuel wholesale prices and tighter supplies due to refinery issues in Illinois. It's leaving motorists taking the hit. "We have five vehicles that we buy gas for each time so it makes a big crunch in the pocketbook," Hitesman said. The price of crude oil is also playing a role, because when crude oil arrives from the United Kingdom it may cost $35 a barrel more than crude oil arriving from Canada. Earlier this year, the variance was as much as $55 a barrel. But, AAA said prices could go down as early as next week. |
