AARP State Fair booth gives seniors a say
And with it being Older Nebraskans Day, the AARP set up a booth at the State Fair. News 5's Lauren Conley made a stop over there to check on the top issues facing seniors.
They call the movement "You've earned a say." Given that today is senior day, there were people everywhere with an opinion on the matter. "People really need to bone up on what the facts are and what's being discussed in Washington," said AARP Nebraska State President Bob Eppler. AARP Nebraska State President says it's time for the public to have a say on Social Security and Medicare. "Decisions are being made behind closed doors regarding those programs," said Eppler. While the non profit organization claims no ties to political parties, they do want to relay a message to congress best representing the people. Over one quarter of the state's retirees live solely on the income of social security leaving them with choices. "Have to make choices between food, rent and medication," Eppler said. Many folks sought refuge from the heat of the day inside. Social Security and medicare are key to their stability. "It's covered us pretty good, I just hope it keeps up," said Dixie Walling "They're really helping me alot. Everything's 100% now," said Dianna Leach. Currently, there are many issues up for debate. AARP took an informal poll on what's most important to the public, and in the end it all comes down to money. "I understand that it's gonna have financial problems so I think there's some things that could be done to strengthen it," said James Witte. With the next presidency undecided people hope whoever's in office won't make cuts or eliminate medicare. Some even plan on voting across party lines. "I'm a card carrying Republican that's gonna vote for Obama," said Witte. Witte thinks Romney can't protect him. Others just want to secure these programs for the future. "They have to do something if they're going to save it for my children, my grandchildren," said Harry Brown. The AARP state president Bob Eppler says anyone in the work force should be concerned about the future of social security and medicare because they're paying into it. They'll be directly affected by any changes made. |
