Allegations aimed at Kearney County sheriff
News 5 has obtained court filings out of Kearney County that contain serious allegations against the sheriff's department from a former deputy who says he was wrongfully fired from his job.
News 5's Lauren Conley was in Minden today looking into those allegations inside the Kearney County Sheriff's Office. A former deputy is suing his former boss. Shane Monthey is alleging Kearney County retaliated against him for keeping a journal. That journal, well, it apparently contained allegations of theft and corruption inside the department. Documents filed with the court contain allegations of lies and betrayal among the people we're supposed to trust the most. Former Kearney County Sheriff Deputy Shane Monthey kept a journal for 6 years. According to court documents the journal "alleged corruption, theft and/ or other illegal and/ or inappropriate activities... by current or former employees and/ or elected officials of the Sheriff's department." Monthey claims that journal was stolen from his home in June of 2011. He was called into a meeting with the sheriff and fired shortly after. "During the course of the meeting, Defendant Sheriff White is alleged to have thrown a folder on a table that contained Plaintiff's personal journal." "Shane Monthey was fired back in August of 2011. He originally filed charges in Lancaster County a few months ago, but since then the case has been transferred to here in Kearney County." Sheriff White is denying all claims against him. He does admit portions of the journal were mailed to him. In White's answer to the complaint his attorney states, "...That a folder containing the copied pages sent to Sheriff White (described in the above paragraph) was also in Sheriff White's possession at such meeting, and that at such meeting, Plaintiff was informed of a prior decision that had been made to terminate him." News 5 has tried to speak with both Shane Monthey and Sheriff White. Calls to White were unreturned. What this case comes down to at this point is not about corruption but wrongful termination. News 5 has spoken with Monthey's lawyer. She says the next step is a motion for discovery and depositions. |
