Four were killed in that crash. Both drivers and two children died including, Caroline Thallman was killed in the accident. She was a fifth grader at Blue Hill Community School.
Friday News 5 spoke with her aunt, Jenae Bauer, who remembers Caroline as a girl that lived life to the fullest. "Caroline was a light and a joy." 10 year old Caroline Thallman loved to travel and recently planned a dream vacation with her family to the Big Apple. "They just did everything you could imagine doing in NYC, they went to the Statue of Liberty and to Ellis Island." Caroline and her 8 year old sister Allie were not only sisters, they were best friends. "They were like Salt and Pepper." Both girls were riding home from school together on Wednesday a quarter of a mile from school. They were just two stops away from being picked up by their dad to go to dance lessons. "Their father saw the smoke from the school bus. At first he worried it was at the house and when he didn't find them at the house he drove to the school bus, searching to the school bus." Mark found Allie injured, but sitting up in a pickup truck on the scene. That's when he went searching for Caroline. "He went to the bus as the bus was in flames and on fire, through the smoke and he's a great man of faith." Caroline died in that crash. Her younger sister Allie was taken to Mary Lanning Healthcare where she received stitches for cuts on her head and treatment for 1st and 2nd degree burns on her fingers. "Each moment that we spend with our children should be precious and we shouldn't put off until tomorrow." Caroline's little sister Allie was released from Mary Lanning Friday. She is at home with her family and is expected to make a full recovery. |
