Beer taxes could increase under new bill

The price of beer could soon be on the rise. This comes as Nebraska lawmakers heard a bill Monday that would increase a beer excise tax by 5 cents per gallon.

Hyannis Senator Al Davis says the legislation would generate about $2.3 million a year.

That money would be split evenly between the State Patrol Cash Fund and county law enforcement agencies.

Davis says the bill is in response to alcohol problems in Whiteclay.

Nebraska's 18 craft breweries, the Nebraska Grocery Association and the Nebraska Licensed Beverage Association all oppose the bill.
