Bill would allow motorcyclists to run red lights
There's a bill that was introduced in the Nebraska legislature that would allow motorcyclists and bikers to run red lights.
Sounds risky. But, the intersection pass can only happen on one condition. Basically, it's putting the decision in the hands of the motorists. If passed LB 85 would authorize motorcycles and bikers to run red lights if they've been sitting at the light for at least two minutes and there's no signs of traffic. Lawmakers are considering the bill because vehicles that weigh less than one thousand pounds don't always set off the sensors underground at traffic lights. In Hastings, those sensors are located at major intersections. News 5 spoke with City Engineer David Wacker on how the sensors work. "When metal such as a vehicle bus or car would pass over them they interrupt a magnetic field that then sends a signal to the controller, we've had some problems in Hastings with that we have been able to adjust some of the magnetometers that are in place to help out on that but again if a motorcycle isn't positioned correctly this does occur," Wacker said. But will some push the envelope if the bill is passed? Some believe allowing smaller mass vehicles to run the light increases safety risks. Wacker suggests educating those smaller vehicles on how to pull into the magnetic field area or adjusting sensitivity levels where it's feasible. |
