October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The pink is what we're used to seeing all over the fundraising events. Jaci Nore from Mary Lanning Morrison Cancer Center and also Wendy Romans from Central Nebraska General Surgery joined News 5 to talk about a variety of activities going on this month to bring more awareness to breast cancer.

Amy: Jaci, would you share with us a little more about what Mary Lanning has planned?

Jaci: Yes, we are challenging everybody in the community to "think pink" regarding just what you said. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. So we have teamed up with Hastings College, the YWCA and American Cancer Society to educate and support the community of women at large because we still have over 200,000 women a year that are diagnosed with breast cancer. Unfortunately, out of that we lose 40,000.

Wendy: We have several events planned during the month of October. Some of them [News 5] will be talking with the YWCA about this week, I believe. But we also have "Pink Night" at Hastings College volleyball, like always. That's the 30th of October. On October 20th we have an event at Wine Styles called "Girls Night Off" and that's an event where we're going to have survivors speaking and just kind of a support night for women who have an interest in learning more about breast cancer or survivors in breast cancer.

Amy: Talking about these statistics, there's still so much room to be done, so much more that we need to know and so much to be developed. Do people realize this, in your opinion, Jaci?

Jaci: No, I don't. So this is why we've decided to have about an activity a week trying, if you will, to catch a broader spectrum of people so that we educate all ages of women in all economic backgrounds.

Amy: Wendy, where can people go for more information?

Wendy: You can go to the Morrison Cancer Center or your provider. Any one of your medical providers will be happy to remind you to get your breast cancer check this month.
