Bruning reconsiders defending new abortion law

by Katie Ferrell

Is defending a new Nebraska abortion law worth an expected lengthy and costly legal battle? That is what Attorney General Jon Bruning is considering.

Bruning said he will not exhaust all legal options to support the Nebraska law.

He said he is considering whether it is worth the time and expense through what could be a lengthy appeals process.

He said he is also considering whether a new bill should be drafted instead.

A U.S. District Judge blocked the state from enforcing the law last week saying the measure could have made it impossible to get an abortion in the state.

The law requires women seeking abortions to undergo mental health screenings.

Supporters of the law said it is designed to make sure women understand the risks that may accompany abortions.
