Catholic students react to naming of new PopeRelated Content
As thousands gathered outside the Vatican for the historic announcement, area Catholics were also awaiting this historic announcement.
One local Catholic school held a special viewing party. News 5's Lauren Conley has been at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Hastings since the white smoke appeared. The feeling there Wednesday night is excitement and relief. Classes were brought to a halt and students at St. Cecilia were brought inside the church to wait for the live unveiling of the Pope. The school set up a projector in the front of the church with a live feed of the Vatican. Cheers erupted when the Pope finally stepped onto the balcony at St. Peter's Square. This was a day many students at St. Cecilia will remember. "We didn't know if it was going to happen today, and then we get this call over the intercom and it's just really exciting and I think it's going to be really interesting to see what changes he's going to bring," said junior Madi Schwenka. "It's just cool because having a new leader of the church it means a lot because you can see, you can anticipate the progress and how forward the Church is going to be now that we have a new leader," senior Magella Swanson said. "Excited and relieved to know who it was. I'm glad we have a new leader and we can move forward," junior Josh Murman said. Students and staff said a prayer along with the new Pope before being released back to class. |
