Cell phone shutoff: Can you go without for a day?
The South Heartland District Health Department is challenging every driver to a day of cell phone free driving. Friday is national cell-off day.
This is part of a national initiative.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 11% of all traffic accidents are caused by cell phone distractions. They say many people think they can do two things at once. But, driving while using a cell phone reduces brain activity associated with driving, as much as 37%.
They hope that asking people to commit to one day of cell-phone free driving will lead to another.
"We just encourage people to try turning off their cell for one day and then another day and then another day and try to make it a habit. That you don't interact with your cell phone or other distractions while driving," said Michelle Bever, South Heartland District Health Department.
They say this will help keep drivers, their riders and other vehicles safe.
