Christmas wreaths can be seen all across the area adding to the holiday atmosphere, but they also serve as objects of remembrance.

As part of the "Wreaths Across America" project that started in 1992, the Grand Island Veterans Home held a wreath ceremony to honor those who have served and those who have fallen.

Many attended the event, including Veteran's Home residents, their families and friends, and members of the Patriot Guard Riders, who are also sponsors of the local ceremony.

"It's a day to honor everyone who has served and everyone who is currently serving and to teach our next generation the cost of freedom and everything like that," said U.S. Army Sgt. Robert Vaira. "It's just really great that the entire nation comes together in a wonderful event like this."

Also as part of the national ceremony 10,000 wreaths were laid at Arlington National Cemetery, and U.S. military sites and ships around the world.
