The next steps are announced for the controversial Keystone XL Pipeline that would run through Nebraska. The US State Department expects to release a Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement next month and then open for public input.
Wednesday several Nebraska organizations continued their call for action from the governor and elected officials in Lincoln.
Rather than leave responsibility to the US State Department, they want Nebraska's elected officials to regulate pipeline construction as well as re-route construction around the sensitive sandhills and Ogallala aquifer.
They said other states the pipeline has passed through have similar oil pipeline regulations in place.
The public will have 45 days to comment after the Supplemental Draft Statement next month.
The US State Department expects to make a decision on granting a construction permit or not by the end of the year.
