Could gas prices spike in 2013?
In 2012 consumers saw some of the highest gas prices in history.
You may have noticed here in the Tri Cities prices took a slight dip. But don't get too comfortable, 2013 could bring in record high numbers across the region. News 5's Dara Newson reports. In 2012 Americans couldn't get a break at the pump. Nationwide gas prices skyrocketed one day and the next gave consumers at the pump a brief sigh of relief. "I think most of us have gotten used to it but I do try to reduce driving a little bit or driving a less expensive vehicle," said Michael Singer. In November 2012, AAA's Fuel Gauge Report shows Nebraska's average for regular unleaded gas was $3.40 a gallon. Gas prices in January 2013 greeted Hastings residents at $3.147 a gallon. "I'm glad they're doing down a little bit compared to what they had been," said Rick Matticks. Experts say consumers could see a price hike at the pump come early April 2013. The Midwest and West coast could see smaller hikes, however issues in refiners could change all of that. "When one or two major refineries announces a problem or a rumor of a problem, the market reacts by raising the price, whether there is really a shortage or not," said Charles Langley, oil industry Watchdog. Other reports show that energy analysts expect prices to rise another 35 cents a gallon through early April before peaking at a National average of $3.95 a gallon. Drivers in Hastings say at that point they'd have to make some major adjustments. "When I see the prices about $3.25, $3.50 it gets kinda crazy at that point," Singer said. "Probably about $3.50 a gallon is when I'll have to start making changes in driving habits," Matticks said. According to AAA's Fuel Gauge Report, 2008 was the highest recorded gas price in Nebraska. The average for regular unleaded gas peaked at $4.10 a gallon. |
