DHHS accounting errors cost taxpayers nearly $2 million
State Auditor Mike Foley says an accounting lapse at the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services has cost Nebraska taxpayers more than $1.8 million.
Foley says the DHHS failed simply to ask in a timely manner for federal reimbursement funds owed to the state. Foley's audit team uncovered the problem while examining accounting for an adoption assistance program. It found that DHHS paid for those program expenses and then failed to seek hundreds of thousands of dollars in Federal reimbursement funds during the five year grace period to do so. The department called the situation a "clerical error", but when auditors dug deeper they saw the problem had been occurring for years.
