Deb Fischer sworn in as new senator

It was one of the most watched U.S. Senate races across the nation in 2012. The battle between Deb Fischer and Bob Kerrey both vying for Ben Nelson's Senate Seat.

While the election was decided in November, Thursday Deb Fischer officially became Nebraska's newest U.S. Senator.

She, along with a slew of others, was sworn in today in the Senate chambers.

After Fischer was sworn in Thursday morning by Vice President Joe Biden she signed in for work and as one of her first acts had a photo op with Biden and her family in a "mock swearing in" ceremony Thursday afternoon.

Fischer was one of 12 "new" senators made official Thursday.

Third District Representative Adrian Smith was also sworn in Thursday for his 4th term in the U.S. House.
