Farmer keeps a piece of Alda history

by Dara Newson

After nearly 140 years later, what was the beginning of Alda still stands. The railroad depot in Alda has lived a useful journey since it was built in the 1870's.

For many years the structure has been vacant and Ag Services intended to tear it down, but one farmer wasn't going to let that happen.

Kenny Layher, is the building's new owner.

The 20 foot by 40 foot building was moved to his farm in Wood River.
But years ago it lived as post office and stage station and railroad depot where all Union Pacific Railroad pushed through Nebraska.

Layher says that once the depot was no longer used for those services it sat empty.

The building started its journey January 31st, relocating to Layher's farm on South Burwick Road. He plans to aesthetically restore the depot to what it used to be.
