Now to an event that was completely legal, but did involve some alcohol... well lots of alcohol. It was the first ever Downtown Do the Brew at the Hastings City Auditorium. 20 state, regional and national brewers participated. There were 63 different craft beers, six wine varieties and one vodka product. More than 400 people attended.
Proceeds will go to the Hastings Community Arts Council. But that's not the only benefit of this event.
"Number one we always try to draw people to downtown and secondly we're trying to promote craft beers to the community, a lot of people are doing home brewing that seems to be a popular pastime," said event organizer Randy Chick.
In case you don't know, craft beer has a more distinctive taste. It's created by smaller brewers.

Saturday night I ran into several friends who had attended this event. None had a designated driver and all were well over the legal limit. It was very unnerving to know these drivers were out on the road. These folks are not heavy drinkers and I don't think they realized that mixing beer and wine would creep up on them. I feel that if a "drinking" event is promoted in Hastings, that all measures are taken to also promote bringing a designated driver or providing transportation home for those who might end up going over their limit. What example are we setting for our teenage children?
