Doniphan Fall Festival full of surprises

The 77th Annual Fall Festival in Doniphan kicked off a little different than normal this year. No, we're not talking about the cold temperatures.

One local fire firefighter had big plans to start the parade Saturday afternoon.

An announcer read a note written by Eric Haile, a member of the Doniphan Fire Department.

That's when Haile proposed to Christa Vincent, his girlfriend of five years, sharing the moment with the small town.

"I'm relieved that the secret didn't get out," Haile said.

"I just looked over at his mom and then I saw him hiding over by the fire truck and I said, oh he's got roses," Vincent explained. "I looked at his mom and I said, are you serious? Is this for real? And she said yes."

Haile says he had the proposal planned for about three weeks and wanted to celebrate as a community.
