It's a national drug take back initiative.

Central Nebraskans had several opportunities in Grand Island, Hastings and Kearney to take back their unused or expired drugs.

Rates of prescription drug abuse in the United States are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses.

Last April, Americans turned in 276 tons of prescriptions at more than 5,600 sites.

The usual method of flushing medicines down the toilet or throwing them in the trash poses potential safety hazards.
