An early morning fire in Grand Island injured one person and completely destroyed a home. The home was located at Kuester Lake Road.

News Five's Dara Newson was on the scene Wednesday morning.

"These people woke up to the smell of smoke and not the detector," said GI Rural Fire Chief Chuck Hoffman.

In Grand Island at Kuester Lake Road firefighters responded to a house fire at 6:45 Wednesday morning.

"It's a single story house the house has been added onto several times as a result of the additions it makes it difficult for us to open a house up and get to the fire in the attic areas that are isolated," Hoffman said.

A family of three adults were able to escape.

One adult had minor burns to their hands after attempting to remove items from the home.

Fire Chief Chuck Hoffman of the rural Grand Island fire department says the home and its contents are a total loss.

"Fire started in the attic, the exact cause we're not sure until we can get into the structure and examine the contents of the structure a little more carefully," said Hoffman.

Crews from the city of Grand Island, Doniphan, Alda and St Libory responded.

"We're still trying to determine if detectors were in the house," said Hoffman.

The fire is still under investigation.
