Engine blamed for igniting railroad ties
In Hall County, the Grand Island Rural Fire department responded to a reported grass fire just before 3:00 pm.
That fire spread to a large pile of railroad ties at Freight Car Rail Services near 70th and Alda Roads, causing damage to a nearby power line. Utility crews, however, re-routed transmission so no consumers lost power. Officials believe a nearby railroad engine caused the fire. "We believe that, that hot carbon came from the engine itself. From the exhaust of the engine and dropped into the super dry grass that we've got out here and started the fire," said Grand Island Rural Fire Chief Chuck Hoffman. The Alda and Cairo fire departments also responded to the fire. |
