Fairfield city audit yields State Patrol investigation
Fairfield residents headed to city hall for business were greeted with an unusual message at the front door: "Closed until further notice."
City offices are operating on limited hours as the State Patrol looks into possible financial improprieties.
According to Fairfield Mayor Lynn Ridgway almost two weeks ago the city learned through a private audit that there may have been misappropriations of funds.
That has led to the suspension of city clerk Jennifer Bassett. But, Bassett has not been fired at this time.
Information found in the annual audit has been handed over to the Nebraska State Patrol.
The Mayor did not know much more at the time and says he is not sure when the State Patrol will wrap up their investigation.
During this investigation, City offices are opened just on Mondays with limited hours.
