Thanksgiving kicked off the holiday season. People have been busy the past couple of days celebrating and shopping. New's 5's Jordan Shefte found an outdoor store that was very popular this weekend.
Thanksgiving was Thursday, but this weekend people are switching gears and going from turkey to trees. We followed one family on their quest to find the perfect pine.
The Baker family had one mission Sunday.
"Getting a Christmas tree."
But they don't want a fake one.
"We like the smell, it's always nice to come in the house and smell the smell of a real tree instead of a fake one."
And they all have a different idea of what the perfect tree entails:
"Big tall one."
"A big one, you want a big one."
"A medium sized one."
"Bushy all the way around, no holes."
Good thing they came to the Pine Patch Tree Farm.
"There's pretty much a tree for everybody," said Dave Glass.
Dave and his wife Nytha own the farm, and have seen plenty of people go through the selection process.
"The perfect tree is different for every individual, some people like a Charlie Brown that's, you know, a crooked trunk and a crooked stem and some people like a tree with holes in it, so they can put large ornaments and that type of thing, and of course there's others that want the perfect tree," said Glass.
Tree farms in Texas have been struggling because of the drought.
"A drought like that can wipe out years of production and can run people out of business," Glass said.
But Dave's business is growing.
"The trees grew really well and I'm pretty proud of our crop this year," said Glass.
And the Baker family is impressed as well.
"This one's the perfect Christmas tree."
They scoured the grounds searching for their tree. They finally decided on a pre-cut tree.
So they had it shook, bagged, and loaded on the car. Now, they just have one thing left to do.
"Decorate it, set it up and decorate it," said the Baker family.
The Pine Patch Tree Farm expects to sell about 200 trees this year. Dave says that unlike those trees in Texas, his are healthy and ready to go to a good home.
