It was this time Wednesday night that 14 year old Cody Christensen was playing with friends along the train tracks in Grand Island.

The group crossed the tracks, but not everyone made it to the other side safely.

Cody Christensen fell and was struck by the westbound train.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Emergency crews responded to the South Garfield and West Third Street crossing around 10-40 last night. Grand Island Police say the group of kids were on the north side of the tracks when one cut across in front of a westbound train.

Christensen, following the others, attempted to cross and fell on the tracks where the Union Pacific train hit him.

Cody's friends have set up a Facebook Memorial page, and tonight they gathered back at the accident site.

More than 50 people attended this balloon release and laid flowers by the tracks.

There were tears and there sadness, but Cody's friends say it was the best way for them to cope with the sudden death of their friend and to comfort each other. They also say there is a lesson to be learned.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced for Cody.
