Farmers turn to Halloween gourd to feed cattle

Tools

Nebraska ranchers are getting into the Halloween spirit. They're using pumpkins as cattle feed.

Due to a shortage of feedstuffs and forages, Nebraska cattlemen are being encouraged to find other feed alternatives.

That is why after Wednesday night, ranchers could be using those carved pumpkins for feed.

Data from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension shows pumpkins are a good source of energy and adequate in protein for beef cattle.

Other crops that can be incorporated into cattle feed rations include field peas, dry edible beans, and whole beets.
